Research sites around South Africa are launching a major study to test the efficacy of a vaccine (HVTN 702) to prevent HIV infection. On Wednesday 30 November, some of the first of 5,400 volunteers to be enrolled in the study will receive their initial injections. the only current HIV vaccine efficacy trial in the world and is being conducted solely in South Africa. It has been seven years since the world last saw the start of an efficacy trial of an HIV vaccine.
